This synthetic diamond and cemented carbide composite material (PDC) perfectly combines the high hardness and wear resistance of diamond with the high strength and high toughness of cemented carbide. Its key physical properties are mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Extremely high wear resistance: The surface layer of this composite is polycrystalline diamond, which possesses exceptional wear resistance. Performance tests show that its wear ratio can reach 6×10 4-∼8×10 4(comprehensive performance can reach the order of 10 5), and the wear resistance of its polycrystalline diamond layer is approximately 80 times that of conventional YG8 cemented carbide.

Excellent impact toughness: Thanks to the physical support provided by the cemented carbide substrate, this material overcomes the shortcoming of single diamond materials, which are prone to brittle fragmentation. In drop-weight impact tests, the composite can withstand impact energy greater than 4.5 Joules (J), demonstrating excellent impact resistance.

Good thermal stability: This composite material can maintain stable performance even in high-temperature environments. Under inert gas protection, when heated to 700℃ and held for 10 minutes before re-testing, its wear ratio only slightly decreases to 5.5×10 4 ∼6×10 4. This indicates that it has excellent resistance to thermal degradation and thermal stability below 700℃.

Possesses conductivity and machinability: During the high-temperature and high-pressure sintering process, the metallic cobalt (Co) in the cemented carbide infiltrates into the diamond layer and forms an extremely thin continuous network. This endows the originally insulating polycrystalline diamond layer with a certain degree of electrical conductivity. Consequently, it can be cut into any desired shape using electrical discharge machining (EDM) techniques, significantly improving the material's machinability.

Tunable performance: The specific physical properties of the composite can be adjusted by changing the particle size of the diamond powder in the raw materials. When sintered with finer particle size (e.g., W20) diamond powder, the composite has higher strength and toughness but relatively lower wear resistance. When using coarser particle sizes (e.g., 120/140 mesh or 170/200 mesh), the material's wear resistance increases significantly, but its toughness decreases. These flexible physical properties allow it to adapt to different cutting or drilling needs.
